Call for submissions to The Morningside Review (Essays)
Deadline for Spring 2011 semester submissions: Friday, 20 May 2011
What is The Morningside Review?
The Undergraduate Writing Program publishes an annual e-journal of superior student essays from its course, University Writing. Instructors and students in University Writing sections draw on this journal as a text in the course to explore the conceptual and formal possibilities of academic writing. The journal reaches a readership of approximately 1800 students, and 80 teachers per year, and it is available to the general public. Thus, for undergraduates, the TMR e-journal offers a unique and highly visible forum for demonstrating excellence, even at this early stage in your development as academic writers. We invite you to submit for our consideration one essay you produced in University Writing (C1010 and F1010) during the spring 2011 semester.
We seek essays that span the range of the progressions in the course (Lens or Critical Response, Conversation, Research, Retrospective). You do not need your instructor’s permission to submit an essay, although you may choose to consult with her or him (or a consultant in the Writing Center) before submitting.* Instructors of University Writing are welcome to nominate additional essays from their sections.
Essays will be reviewed by the Directors of the Undergraduate Writing Program and The Morningside Review Advisory Board for publication in the academic year 2011-2012. Each selected essay will be edited prior to publication.
How will I know if my essay has been selected?
Due to the high volume of submissions we can only notify those writers whose essays have been selected, usually within one semester of the final submission date.
* The publication is non-profit, and there are no royalties. If chosen, the essay will be published on the program’s website in the academic semester following the contest, and will remain online in journal archives. Any print publication rights are available to the authors. The decisions of the Directors of the Undergraduate Writing Program regarding which essays will be published are final.
